Ikara Ultra

Ikara - Flinders Ranges

IKARA ULTRA

FLINDERS RANGES

On the precipice of Outback South Australia, where dreams were born, made and indeed broken. There is a place that is as old as time itself, where the Adnyamathanha people gathered, a meeting place “Ikara” where stories and dreamings are told that are as rich as the earth from which they herald.….

This land is Ikara - Flinders Ranges. The run is Ikara Ultra.

@rideadelaide James Raison

There is no doubt that on the top of the list of must-see places in South Australia; that doesn’t involve wine that Ikara-Flinders Ranges would be it.

Over 600 million years old, the Flinders Ranges is one of Australia’s most magnificent landscapes. The Adnyamathanha People (meaning hills or rock people) are the traditional custodians of this diverse landscape, which is world-renowned for its wealth of natural, cultural significance, historic and scenic values.

Particularly extraordinary are the fossils and geology of the Flinders Ranges, which display the history of our planet and the evolution of life on Earth. Some of this critical evidence spans more than 300 million years and includes the world’s finest example of the Ediacaran explosion of life, when the earliest forms of complex multicellular animal life evolved. It is these outstanding geological and palaeontological forms within the Ikara-Flinders Ranges that make it an incredible place to run in and an important site to pursue for World Heritage Listing.

It’s no coincidence the Heysen Trail starts in Ikara- Flinders Ranges before weaving its way down through the Adelaide Hills to Cape Jervis.

A region full of riches and heartache, droughts and loss, homesteads and ruins, booms and bust. So many stories can be told, and the locals always have a tale to tell. Now MMI get to continue the legacy of the Irrational South and showcase this magnificent destination to you with the Ikara Ultra -Flinders Ranges 100 Miler. and supporting events. A wonderful trail network that will take you through old stations, Wilpena Pound, along creeks, stopping at shearing sheds, homesteads, mountain tops, ruins and starting in the historic town and once booming railway capital of Australia, Quorn; where pre 100 miler registrations, dinner and briefing will be held. From here its a good nights sleep and a short 1 hour drive to the start line at Mt Little Station for crewed runners or arrangements can be made for car pooling/shuttles from the Wilpena Pound finish line for solo self supported entrants.

Whilst its not the same epic 200 mile Irrational South that it was, Ikara Trail Run will remain the same life changing adventure as I.S. set out to be. Let’s make adventure happen. Let’s gather in Ikara, the aboriginal name for ‘meeting place’ and let our stories flow through our shared love of trails, running and community.
